How to run HP ScanJet 4300C in Windows 7 32/64 bit?

2 min read

Question:

Hewlett-Packard [HP] stopped making new drivers for Scanjet 4300C long ago. No drivers are available for Windows 7 or, even, Vista. So is there a way to install and make this scanner work in Windows Vista, or Windows 7? Can it work in 32 and 64-bit versions of newer Microsoft Windows?

Answer:

As far as I know, the only way to use HP Scanjet 4300C scanner in Windows 7 [32 or 64 bit] is to install Windows XP Mode and use this scanner inside it. This mode, or feature provides Windows XP environment within Windows 7. It is like you have a copy of XP installed in your machine. It is a virtual operating system with fully loaded features.

Using the XP Mode

XP mode can help you use stuff, which is incompatible in Windows 7. Follow these steps to install it.

1. Download and install Windows Virtual PC.
2. Make sure that your PC meets the requirements as described here
3. Download and install the XP mode from here.

After you install Windows XP Mode, connect the scanner to your PC. Look for “USB” option in the top toolbar. When you click on this option, you will see a list of devices that you have attached to your PC; it should show the scanner too. Select to “Attach” the scanner and then install its drivers. You must attach the scanner and install its drivers; inside Windows XP mode, external devices aren’t attached by default. You must attach them by following the aforementioned instructions.

After Windows install the drivers for your HP Scanjet 4300C scanner, restart the virtual machine, if needed. Remember that you must “Attach” your scanner each time you start Windows XP mode.

Buy a new scanner

You can use Scanjet 4300C in Win 7 with the help of XP mode, but you are better off buying a new scanner, which is compatible with Win 7 and other newer Windows versions. Running XP mode each time you need to use the scanner is frustrating and it is a complete waste of time. Scanners are quiet cheap these days; you can get one for under $50. HP has a whole series of cheap Scanner + Color-Printer products available for low prices.

Yes, you can still use HP Scanjet 4300C scanner in newer Windows, but is this really worth the effort? I don’t think so!

Update: Read this comment. It explains another method for installing this scanner. I haven’t tried it myself but other users have confirmed that this solution is working.

  1. Thanks, just one note: you have to go to BIOS and downgrade USB from 3.0 to 2.0, otherwise you’ll wont be able to attach the scanner

  2. Step 1 download the latest XP driver
Step 2 Run the unzip file under administrator (you can experience a error for not being able te create C:/sj657/HPupdate.exe) don’t worry it will install all the file’s.
Go to the C:/sj657 folder and run Setup under administrator by clicking right mouse button.
Step 3 Windows 7 will tell you the software is only for win 98 xp and nt but after that it will ask to run the program in compatibility mode.
When doing so it will successfully install the HP LTX driver and program.

Good luck so far got it running on 3 Win7 systems now
