Firefox: How To Move Tabs Below The Address Bar?

2 min read

UPDATE:

In Firefox 29.00 and above versions, the below solutions may not work. Firefox has also changed its core theme. If you want to get the old theme back and also want tabs to show below the Address-Bar then the solution is to use Classic Theme Restorer add-on.

Another way to solve this issue is to use Tabs on bottom add-on. It requires no browser restart and you do not need to set any complicated options. Install this plugin and enjoy using Firefox the way you want it.

Firefox new design is sleek!

The theme restorer plugin brings back the old Firefox design and features, where the second add-on does just one job; it puts tabs below address-bar. I personally use the first-one because I like the old Firefox design. The new look and features are fancy indeed, but they reduce productivity of this browser for power-users.

For an average PC user, the new Firefox design is certainly an improvement because it looks much cooler now. For programmers, web-designers, webmasters, and other power-users, looks don’t matter much; they want a fast browser that can help them do their work in a quick and effective manner. Fortunately, Firefox gives us total-freedom when it comes to customizing it. Furthermore, we don’t need to write any code, or make an add-on because developers have done that for us. We just need to find the right plugin and install it.

The old solution

Question:

Firefox has made lot of changes in the past few updates, one of which was moving the Tabs to the top. How can I move them back below the address bar, like they were in the past?

Answer:

Method 1:

Open Firefox: right click on blank space in front of the last Tab. Here, uncheck the following option:

Tabs On Top

That’s it! Tabs should now show below the address bar.

Method 2:

Open Firefox and type the following [without quotes] in the address bar:

“about:config”

If a warning message shows up, click on:

“I'll be careful, I promise”

In top-left corner, a Search Bar will show up. Type the following;

tabs.ontop

This will show you one entry in the main window. Double-click on it to change its value to False.

  1. my tabs mysteriously jumped to the top!! I cannot move them – none of the suggestions here worked. Firefox v62.0. I recently moved to Firefox from Chrome as Google is a monster and tracks EVERYTHING! BUT, I will have to fine another answer.

    1. I’m having the same issue with FF Quantum 64! Not only have none of the fixes have worked, but there’s no “Classic Theme Restorer”! Also, seems that my Chrome folder fix also doesn’t work. Please, is there a fix for tabs relocating beneath the address bar?

  2. I can confirm that @PeaceByJesus’s suggestion https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tabs-on-bottom/ works, and that @mike-ots’s suggestion https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/classicthemerestorer/ also works. As far as I know, those are the two ways (that currently exist) on how to get the darn tabs back on the bottom[, WHERE THEY *BELONG*].

    >Also: Starting with Firefox version 45, Firefox removed the “Tab-Groups” feature. You can get it back with this add-on: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tab-groups-panorama/

  3. None of the methods suggested to get the tabs below the URL line work. In about:config the value of browser.tabsontop is set to false. But the tabs remain on top. The add-on, classic theme restorer also does not do anything to get the tabs back below the URL line where they belong.

  4. Hi,

In newest addition of Firefox, none of the methods mentioned here work and as author of this post explained in the UPDATE, the only solution seems to be using the Theme Restorer plugin. Unfortunately, I cannot seem to understand all the options there are in this plugin. This seems to be a very hectic job.

I simply want my old Firefox back, how can I do this?

There are so many options in this plugin and I understand none of them. Which option to turn on and which to turn off?

Any guidance will be much appreciated.

    Thax in advance

  5. ive been using firefox for years.. after this last update where u a***oles moved my tabs above the addy bar im srsly thinking about switching.. how f*****g hard is it to understand that people want to put the tabs below the address bar?

  6. Hi,
Method 1: the “tabs on top” in the menu does NOT show
Method 2: tabs.ontop (is not there). the other option was already on false I reset it, now it’s gone. What now?

    1. Same — Firefox 29.0:
No menu option for tabs on top.
      about:config — browser.tabs.onTop;false already, but tabs on top :-(

        1. 3 years later, out comes a new version and cant put the tabs under the address bar again, big waste of space bar with nothing at all on it under the address bar now but cant move the tabs there.

  7. Thanks. For some reason, my tabs migrated to the top after a crash and restart of Firefox. I do NOT like my tabs above my bookmark and address toolbars.
